Clinton Lake State Park, Kansas

Tuesday, June 28, 2011. Our adventure related to this campsite happened on the way back to I70 and our trip east. More about that later.

We really liked Clinton Lake. The site was comfortable and lovely, and hiking was really fun. We chose a trail that promised an Arch along the way, and there was, indeed, an arch as you can see! A good long hike followed by showers, an exellent camp supper cooked tableside, and fireflies in the evening accompanied by some quiet rock and roll on Vince's very small radio.

It was on the way back to I70 and our trip East that we had an experience to be remembered. I was driving along the country road that led from the park. In the past five or six minutes, we had seen one other car, so Vince asked me to slow and then stop so he could take some art photos of some hay bales in a curvy field. The shadows were just right and I know they will be beautiful.

There was no one else in sight up or down the road. No building, just the pretty scenery. I sat in the 4Runner and watched Vince in the side mirror. He was happily taking photos. I lowered the window to catch a breeze and heard a squeaky clangy sound. Under a tree, directly across the road, was a most strange device. It looked like some kind of a pod on three or maybe four legs. It was sort-of facing me, and then it swung around and I could see it tracking Vince has he walked along the road taking photos. Then it swung around and faced me again. I smiled at it. Can't say why. Just seemed like the right thing to do at the moment. Then I dug out my iphone and took a photo. I'ts hard to see because of the shade of the tree.

Vince came back and I told him about the thing. He hopped back out of the car and walked over to take a picture.. It followed him...as he walked along. He actually came back to the car quite quickly and we left. He said it made the hair on the back of his neck stand up! We've had many conversations about this experience and looked at our photos. Maybe someone else will know what it is. Here are Vince's photos.
